Right Underwear For Your Loose Boho Wedding Dress

Right Underwear For Your Loose Boho Wedding Dress

Loose boho wedding dress style is something modern brides love and search for. But what do you wear underneath thin and delicate fabrics that possibly skim your every curve and hide absolutely nothing? Our five underwear tips go over shaping, smoothing, colors, next to nothing -way and picking only one undie over others. We also talk a bit about handling your curves and some TMI details you might need to consider.

Underwear For That Loose Boho Wedding Dress

Loose boho wedding dress is at the same time a trendy and classic choice. It’s also a dress for the relaxed and comfort loving bride who is all about having a good time while feeling great. Picking a right underwear is crucial for the wedding dress to look it’s best. Many people make the mistake thinking that the loose fitting gown doesn’t need shapewear or needs just minimal underwear, but the more slight and gauzy the dress is the more important the right underwear becomes as everything you have underneath will show.

Here is my tips for choosing a right underwear for you loose boho wedding dress.

1. Stop To Think About Shaping

Your need of shaping and supporting underwear is very much tied to your body shape and your needs. Many loose fitting gowns sport the deep cut back that’s so very trendy right now but can give a real challenge for brides with bigger cup sizes.

Good options for those situations are speciality bras, tape and silicone bras and backless bodysuits.

For brides with smaller breasts all you might need are niple covers to smooth up the action at the front.

Lower tummy can be something you want to smooth over and there your best bet is the old fashioned high rise panties with elastic support panel. Just check that they don’t show if your dresses back is low cut.

2. Next Step – Go Vintage, Pick A Slip

Grandmas knew how to do it. After getting on their bras and girdles, they wore a soft silky slip to smooth down all the seams and to make sure that their uppermost dress fell nicely down the body.

This step is crucial if your loose boho wedding dress tends to be see through in light or shows underwear seams easily.

The slip isn’t meant to be shaping, instead choose something that you can just step into. Bias cut or knit fabrics work really well. The surface should be smooth and slippery to avoid your wedding dress climbing up and bunching or snagging on a bra for example.

The absolute plus side is that you can use your slip as a sexy and comfortable nightwear and reuse it underneath other dresses if needed. The slip in the picture is by BHLDN (although currently unavailable, check the site for similar pieces.)

3. About The Color

Your best bet is to pick a skin colored underwear, but soft pink ones or cream can work also if you’re light skinned.

For dark skinned brides you can try on deeper colors that match your skin tone like vine reds and blum violet if you want to pick something else than dark nude.

If you use a slip it should be white like your dress or matched to your skin. There’s reasons why white underneath white rarely works, but the slip can act like extra layer to your white gown.

Read more about picking the right underwear to use underneath white clothes here.

4. Going Without

There’s also a possibility to go basically commando, if your gown doesn’t seem to work with anything and you feel comfortable enough to do so.

Body skimming thin satin gowns with super open back and thin straps are often the kind of dresses people dream of someday wearing. With those kind of gowns your only possibility can be covering your niples with silicone pads and wearing a seamless microfibre thong.

You might want to get your pubes (yeah, I’m going to go there, I’m a professional who’s here to help so…) trimmed in some way to smooth everything down because I swear those wiry hairs sometimes seem to have a life of their own.

+ tip

Use fashion tape to secure the dress to avoid ‘oops’ situations. To get the best possible result swipe your skin with alcohol swab to clean up the oils and grease before applying the tape.

5. All Ins

I mentioned a bodysuit earlier and it’s a really good option if you feel like you need whole body shaping and need to avoid seams. With a bodysuit you basically have everything in the same package: bra, tummy control, butt and thigh shaping. The best thing is that there will be no visible panty seams and the dress will just beautifully skim downwards on your torso.

There’s good options out there which have super open back and even front for those plunging necklines or peekaboo details. Some of them have even self adhesive cups so you can wear them without straps with strapless gowns like the one in the picture by Net-A-Porter.

I would advise reading reviews before ordering to find out what would be the best option for your body type and dress. For curvy brides with more front action these kind of bodysuits would most likely be better option than basic strapless bra as they can offer more support and hold.

Even Loose Boho Wedding Dress Needs Underwear

I tend to be a preacher when it comes to underwear and wedding dresses, but the fact is that good underwear is the first step to a well fitting wedding dress.

Pros and Cons of Unique Wedding Dresses And Bespoke Gowns

Unique wedding dresses are dreams coming true – something made just for you! When deciding if you want to get bespoke wedding dress or shop a wedding gown from a boutique it’s good to go over what is special about bespoke designs. We wrote a handy pros & cons list about unique wedding dresses and bespoke wedding gowns that lists all the positive and negative sides about getting a dress designed and fit for you. Unique Wedding Dresses And Bespoke Gowns:

My Pros And Cons List

PROS

You can decide every detail in unique wedding dresses.

The dress will fit perfectly for you.

No one else will have exact same design.

Infinite possibilities in terms of color and style.

You can include personal keepsakes or vintage elements into the dress.

Designer will help you every step on the way.

CONS

Cost can be higher with bespoke wedding dresses than with ready-to-wear wedding gowns.

There’s no possibility to see or try on that particular dress finished until it has been made for you.

You need to find a designer/seamstress who you trust and whose style you like

It’s necessary that you have some ideas about the style of the dress and your likes and dislikes.

Few Words About Unique Wedding Dresses

As a wedding dress designer I know very well the pros and cons of getting a dress made just for you. Bespoke wedding gown is always special kind of thing even for a designer and even more for a bride. Often one-of-a-kind wedding dresses are associated with celebrity wedding and luxury events, but basically anyone can get a bespoke wedding dress.

When thinking about costs of a bespoke and unique wedding dresses it’s good to remember that the cost of a  wedding dress goes beyond the amount you see on the prize tag in the boutique. Most of the dresses need some alterations to be done and their cost can often be 25-40% more to the top of the prize tag. In bespoke gowns you don’t need to get alterations done afterwards so the end cost can actually be about very similar.

When The Bespoke Is For You – And When It’s Not

Anyone can get a bespoke wedding dress done, but there’s few particular brides who really get to enjoy the pros of a gown made just for you. Brides who have really unique body types or particular needs really get their money’s worth when ordering bespoke gowns. Whether you’re a petite, small in stature, pluz sized, tall, use a wheelchair or any other daily equipment a good designer will help you to get your dream look and include your personal needs in the best possible way. I know that this list is really rough and bundles together wide array of different people, but if you feel you have any particular needs or find it difficult to shop for a clothes I warmly recommend getting a wedding dress made just for you.

When you don’t have definite style in mind and want to see as many different dresses on you, it’s good to book an appointment to a wedding dress boutique. This way you can see and try on several looks and if you find your dream dress – that’s even better! Even if you don’t, you have figured out the styles and details you like or don’t like and can take the experience with you to the designer or seamstress. If you have trouble deciding about things, want to see everything ready and finished before making decisions or are unsure of your likes and dislikes ready-made dresses might be the better option for you.

What To Wear Under White Clothes – Including The Wedding Dress

What To Wear Under White Clothes – Including The Wedding Dress

Best choice is to wear nude lingerie under white clothes, as they blend in with your skin. White is a wonderful color whether you wear it everyday or at a special occasion like a wedding. In this blog post we go over the best type of underwear to use underneath white clothes including wedding dresses. Here is my 5 best tips when choosing what to wear under white clothes or a wedding gown.

Underwear And White Clothes

White clothes are one of my favorites, hands down. There’s something dramatic and airy in the all white ensemble and when it comes to wedding dresses white is the most popular choice.

What I don’t enjoy when it comes to white clothes is how see through they often are. White is a tricky color in fabrics as the same fabric type can be super see through in white and there might be absolutely no problem in other colors. I have worked with many white dresses and I still get surprised about how many layers are needed to make a dress that covers everything underneath.

Here I wanted to share my top 5 tips for what to wear under white clothes and especially wedding dresses. Some of the tips are tailored also for light and airy fabrics or specific dress types like open back – but read through the blogpost and get the information. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them in the comments. I’m glad to answer them!

Here is my 5 tips for what to wear under white clothes!

1. Nude Or Blush Colored Underwear

First instinct is to wear white underneath white, but that’s actually no-no. That’s because if there’s even an ounce of sheerness in the uppermost fabric the white undies will show really clearly as it makes that part of the body more white than the others.

That’s why you should aim to your natural flesh tones when picking your underwear for underneath white clothes. For light skinned even blush and pink works better than bright white or you can try champagne and gold colored also. For darker skin tones along with champagne and gold you can try red ones, wine red, deep violet or even pure black if there’s no good nude colors available.

If your dress has several layers and it’s absolutely no see through even in bright daylight, you can basically pick any color you love. Why not even pick blue ones as your ‘something blue’.

2. Light Shapewear

My to go phrase for my customers when it comes to clothing is “a dress is not a shapewear”.

What I mean is, that there’s proper shapewear which are designed to slim down your curves and they work thousand times better and make anything on top of them look awesome.

Flesh colored shapewear makes sure there’s no seams or unneeded stress on the uppermost clothes. Most of the shapewear nowadays is surprisingly comfortable and made from soft and smooth materials.

If you want to have some serious shaping go for metal boned corset, corselette or waist trainer. The wedding dress or other gown isn’t made for reshaping you and most of the bones in them are meant to keep the dress itself in it’s shape, not to reshape you.

If you want only slight smoothing, even high waisted panties or tights can do the trick. Again, pick flesh toned ones.

3. Microfibres

These lovely, smooth, stretchy silk like microfibre fabrics are often made from polyamide or polyester. They are widely used in underwears for their softness and possibility to knit them into seamless panties and bras.

Underwear made from microfibres are usually very unnoticeable and they don’t tend to catch with other clothes because of their smoothness and slippery surface. That’s why they are perfect to use underneath light and sheer fabrics.

So when picking your knickers and bras go with those smooth microfibre fabrics instead of lacy confections.

4. Silicone Bra In Flesh Color

Trendy open backs and deep necklines are beautiful looking, but they certainly are tricky when it comes to holding your boobs in place. One of the best options is to use a backless silicone bra that sticks into your skin. Many of them come in flesh colors so they are great option if you have sheer panels or light white fabric.

There’s several different types and models, but I would advice to get one which is as wide as possible to give you the best support. The older types tended to slip off when you got sweaty, but there’s interesting newer ones that actually stick even tighter when skin gets damp.

So make some detective work to find the best one for you and make sure your skin is clean by wiping it with hand sanitizer before wearing them.  The bra in the picture is by Coconut Grove.

5. White Or Nude Slip

Slip is really unused piece of clothing in modern days in my mind. It adds one light weight and smooth layer and you can use it with any dress or skirt you need. Many white clothes need three-four layers to be really not-see-through and in cases where there isn’t enough layers the slip acts like one.

Slip works best with clothes that are made off sheer fabrics, slightly loose and not boned – like summer dresses, bias cut clothes and dresses without lining. Ideally you wear a slip with bra and panties. Sometimes you can get just underskirt instead of whole slip.

Nude colored slips are again the most handy type, but you can also go for white one if you are not bothered by the possibility of seeing the figure of the slip. With very sheer fabrics not seeing the layer underneath might be impossible. In that case the nude colored slip might look like you really don’t have anything underneath. Picking a white slip is a good way to avoid that and look more modest. Go what you feel is best for you.

Underwear is the most important part of any outfit!

The importance of good underwear is not understood as well as I would like to. The better you want to look the more crucial good underwear is. That’s why you should always use time and money for it. Even expensive and stylish clothes look bad with ill fitting underwear or wrong kind of undies.

Thinking about your underwear is important especially with a wedding dress. It’s good to think about your figure and the support or slimming it might need when choosing your wedding dress and figuring out what kind of underwear you need.

Other Things To Consider With Underwear:

Can you go without bras? Nipple covers are handy when there’s only modesty to think about.

Frills are lovely, but maybe save the lace to the wedding night. This way you can freshen up a bit after a long day.

Does your dress need a petticoat? Make sure you get the right shaped one to support the figure of your dress.

If you are worried of chafing thighs wear a pantyhose, long legged panties or use plenty of talc powder.

If you’re busty and need plenty of support, get a good body or corset. You can even find ones that work with open back or strapless dresses. Not both at the same time though most likely.

White Infinity Dress – A Wedding Wardrobe Stable

White infinity dress is a perfect piece for any bride’s wedding wardrobe. This soft and slightly shiny convertible twist and wrap dress is a great choice whether you use it as a rehearsal dinner dress, reception dress or as an actual wedding dress.

Infinity dress turns into several beautiful styles and you can style it differently during the wedding day. After the wedding pack it with you to the honeymoon and you’ll have an elegant gown to all those romantic dinner dates.

We offer infinity dresses in 23 colors, but the absolute favorites for brides have been cream, silk white and snow white. In the blogpost  pictures you see our snow white infinity dress in maxi length styled in several different ways.

The hair accessories in the pictures are Anya Turban Headband and Midsummer Rose Pins. Both are available at Heili Bridal’s shop. Pictures by talented Sirpa from Piirto Photography, operating from Savonlinna Finland.

1. One Shoulder White Infinity Dress For Trendy Bride

This one shoulder style is like straight from Acropolis temple. It’s at the same time very classic and also modern with its simplicity. This is a sturdy and easy to tie style that typically doesn’t need pins or fashion tape to stay put. You can even cover bra band by rolling the straps lover on the back or using a tube top underneath.

2. Romantic Era Of Jane Austen

This is hands down one of my favorite looks from our photoshoot – cap sleeves and empire waist give the air of Austen heroines with their regency fashions. This is again easy style to tie and easy to accessorize. Try adding pearl or rhinestone brooches to the straps for some bling.

3. Tie The Knot With White Infinity Dress

Knots are wonderful way to create different styles. Here is two versions of grecian style knotted straps. The first is a beautiful two straps plus sweetheart style. If the sweetheart tie feels like slipping, just use two small safety pins to attach the straps. The second style has lovely little cap sleeves made with the help of knots and a statement back!

4. From Full Coverage To Strapless

Here the white infinity dress really shines as a wedding gown – you can choose your own coverage. You need to get your shoulders covered for church? No problem! Want to shine on the dance floor with strapless dress, just change the style. TIP: for strapless styles, get a good bustier or long strapless bra that stays put and tuck the infinity dress straps in between the bra and skin.

5. Princess Gown With White Infinity Dress Overlay

This extra tulle hem transforms simple white infinity dress into a dreamy princess wedding gown. Customise your basic infinity dress with the overlay of your own choice. Later during the reception you can lose the extra hem and change into sleek and sexy style for the evening. Whether you’re looking for tulle, lace, chiffon or anything else, we search the fabric according your wishes and deliver the ready made overlay with your infinity dress.

5 Garden Wedding Tips For Brides

Garden weddings are super trendy! Flowers, trees, fresh air and warm atmosphere are a perfect setting for a romantic occasion. Still, there are some things you should remember when choosing your wedding dress – happily we are sharing them right here, keep reading!

#1 Bugs love tulle

I kid you not! When there’s a big, soft tulle hem there most likely will be all kinds of flying and crawling friends in between the layers too. Sirpa from Piirto Photography shared a memory of one bride who got actual ants climbing up her skirt. Yaiks! So think twice about the tulle froufrou – maybe choose something with less layers or keep it short. Here is some inspiration:

#2 Slims heels get stuck in the grass

Soft lawn and sky high stilettos are not the most graceful combination. The sharp heels will sink into the grass like hot knife into butter and you’ll be stumbling down. Pick shoes with sturdier heels or even opt in fot beautiful flats. If you’re determined to wear slim heels, get a pair of clear plastic stoppers like those from Solemates or Gogoheel that effectively keep you from sinking. I can vouch for them, I used a pair at my own wedding.

#3 Wind can be a nuisance

This is particularly true if your wedding happens close to a shore of any kind. It’s always windy by the water. If you’re wearing a veil, it can get tricky very fast when the wind is blowing. Get yourself some magnetic veil weights that keep the veil from flying everywhere. Or skip the long veil and choose something smaller like the bandeau style birdcage veil below here.

#4 Long trains will get dirty

We can always hope for good weather, but the truth is that occasional rains happen. Soggy ground will get muddy underneath the guests feet very quickly and that doesn’t do good for your white hems. Long trains will get dusty and dirty even without rain – gravel and grass are enough. So think over whether you should pick a dress without a train or consult your seamstress on how to bustle the train up for the reception. We also love Trainloop to neatly bustle up the train.

Swarowski Pearl Trainloop from Trainloop.com

 #5 It can get HOT

When midsummer sun is baking down on your marquee and lawn you might question your decision to skip the air conditioned ballroom. A wedding dress with plenty of layers acts like a down jacket by trapping air inside and insulating you from that blessed gasp of cooler wind. In other words – you’ll sweat like a sinner in church if you’re wearing a wedding dress with a big hem. You can fight the sweats by dusting yourself with baby powder before getting dressed, and staying in shade. Or you can pick something slim and super comfortable. I can recommend an infinity dress which works beautifully as a bridal look especially when combined with statement accessories or a lace hem.

Here you go! With these tips in mind you’ll avoid many unhappy surprises at your garden wedding. Don’t forget to go and see my Instagram and Pinterest – we share plenty of wedding inspiration in both channels. Happy planning!

Wedding Dress Before-After:

More Possibilities

When you can’t find a ready made wedding gown with right style, one chance is to refashion some other gown into a one you want. Refashioning or restyling a wedding dress is cheaper than getting a totally bespoke gown and you can still get the look you’ve been dreaming about. This wedding dress refashion turned simple gown into flowery beauty.

The original dress we started with was by Danish wedding dress brand Lilly. The dress was bought new. Passions by Lilly dress was a great choice for a refashioned dress by the bride as the original gown was well constructed, beautiful and simple with good materials. It would have been great gown on it’s own for any bride who loves minimalistic style.

Adding A Lace Top To A Wedding Dress

In this case the bride had envisioned a wedding dress with a lace top with very organic feel. We started by choosing a right lace together with the bride from several different samples. The lace was constructed by cutting it into a smaller pieces and pinning it into a place so the bride could see how the dress would look before sewing. The lace pieces were then sewn into place by hand.

Creating A Bigger Hem By Adding Extra Layers

We altered the dress also by adding two more layers of tulle to the hem. The change to the silhouette was small, but it gave the dress more fulness. It’s an easy way to upgrade a wedding dress slightly – even the two layers made a difference in the feel and shape of the hem.
