Wedding Dress Before-After:

More Possibilities

When you can’t find a ready made wedding gown with right style, one chance is to refashion some other gown into a one you want. Refashioning or restyling a wedding dress is cheaper than getting a totally bespoke gown and you can still get the look you’ve been dreaming about. This wedding dress refashion turned simple gown into flowery beauty.

The original dress we started with was by Danish wedding dress brand Lilly. The dress was bought new. Passions by Lilly dress was a great choice for a refashioned dress by the bride as the original gown was well constructed, beautiful and simple with good materials. It would have been great gown on it’s own for any bride who loves minimalistic style.

Adding A Lace Top To A Wedding Dress

In this case the bride had envisioned a wedding dress with a lace top with very organic feel. We started by choosing a right lace together with the bride from several different samples. The lace was constructed by cutting it into a smaller pieces and pinning it into a place so the bride could see how the dress would look before sewing. The lace pieces were then sewn into place by hand.

Creating A Bigger Hem By Adding Extra Layers

We altered the dress also by adding two more layers of tulle to the hem. The change to the silhouette was small, but it gave the dress more fulness. It’s an easy way to upgrade a wedding dress slightly – even the two layers made a difference in the feel and shape of the hem.

Scandinavian DIY Wedding in Mint and Pink

DIY wedding in pink and mint by the nerdy couple that loves dancing. We wouldn’t miss this for the world! This couple took the diy to the end by having the reception at the old church they live in. Nerdy Mint and pink diy wedding

Lotta and Tuomo are your definition of a DIY couple. They live in a lovely old church that they have been renovating for their home for about a year now. The couple is very budget savvy and crafty and that shows in their DIY wedding with plenty of homemade food and decorations.

The old church home with it’s high ceiling and tall windows was like made for the wedding occasion. Couple’s personal style showed very well during the wedding: clean and minimalistic Scandi style combined with soft pastel tones and do-it-yourself details created the wedding atmosphere.

Custom made wedding dress

Lotta contacted us at Heili Bridal in the winter before her wedding asking for a custom made wedding dress. She wanted a wedding gown that would flatter her curves, would be comfortable to dance and eat with and look relaxed yet romantic.

We worked with her through spring and summer. Our first time meeting was in February when we had tea and chatted with the bride and her mom about the look Lotta had been thinking about and presented some ideas of our own. We created about dozen different designs from which Lotta decided the look she liked best. After small changes to the design and finding the fabrics we started the dress.

The custom made wedding dress had a long sleeved lace bodice with satin skirt with tulle and lace overlay. We used three different kind of lace for the dress: two to build the bodice and add details to it and one wide lace trim on the hem. The dress itself was soft and light with only light boning and cups to ensure it kept its shape on the body.

P.s The relaxed tone can be seen also on the grooms attire. Sneakers keep the outfit trendy and easy going and we absolutely love the patterned dress shirt.

Handmade decorations

In the spirit of DIY wedding the crafty couple made many of the decorations by themselves. The bride crafted thousand origami cranes to be used with the painted tree branch as a reception centrepiece. Budget savvy couple also used Ikea in their decorations (Knoppa sheets anyone?). Lotta let us into the secret that the last decorations to go up were the beautiful fairy lights in the reception room after midnight the night before wedding. It’s lucky they had the party at their home so the bed was close!

Mint To be

The theme color for their wedding was mint which has been favorite color of Lotta for years. It’s also very prominent color in their home decoration which of course helped to tie the wedding to the reception at home.

Mint could be found for example in bride’s shoes, grooms bow tie and suspenders and serviettes. Sweetest little detail was the couple’s dog Rudolf’s matching mint colored bow tie.

Geeky and romantic details

Wonderful little details were the lego couple cake topper and a social media hashtag that nodded towards Star Wars movie series.  After church the quests blew bubbles instead of rice. The lovely Hooray! wands were ordered and they were one of the bride’s favorite details. The first dance was one the most loved Finnish vintage ballade ‘Romanssi’ which was something the bride had dreamed about since she was little.

Leaving the church with style

The wonderful baby pink car that couple used to leave the church was Nissan Figaro owned by groom’s friend. The almost toy car had had one of its front seats taken away so the bride’s dress had enough room and apparently there wasn’t too much space for the groom either but you have to love it anyway!

Congratulations once more Lotta and Tuomo! Your DIY wedding looked breathtaking and romantic. It was such a pleasure to create the dream wedding dress for your special day and can we just tell you that you guys glowed during the wedding. <3 Thank you for the chance to present your wedding here in Heili Bridal’s blog!
