Jewels By Laura Darth

Blush engagement ring is absolutely #weddingtrends2020 and that’s why we sat down with a goldsmith Laura Darth to chat about them. We got to know Laura when we both presented our collections at Paris Fashion Week Autumn 2018. Laura and we connected over the love of flowers and gardens and because our brands are equally inspired by scandinavian simplicity and soft femininity.

Since then jewels By Laura Darth have been part of many of our wedding shoots and we have attended two wedding fairs together. We felt that she was totally the one to talk about engagement rings and wedding jewels at our blog! All the jewels by Laura are designed and crafted at Helsinki, Finland. She also makes bespoke pieces.

If you fall in love with ‘Pretty in Pink’ ring – the blush engagement ring down below – please take a moment and go vote the ring at ‘Vuoden Kaunein Sormus (the most beautiful ring of the year) 2019. Link is here! The voting closes at 31 of October 2019 so be quick.

Blush Engagement Ring ‘Pretty in Pink’

Let’s talk about the ring! Your ring is competing of the title ‘the most beautiful ring of the year 2019’ in Finland. What inspired ‘Pretty in Pink’?

I have to admit that I designed my dream ring when I created ’Pretty in Pink’. The shape of the ring shows my love for the vintage style. This really is my perfect dream ring that I would wear myself.

Blush engagement ring is very different from the clear diamond that was super popular only a year or so back. How did you end up with the soft pink style?

I have loved pink and blush for years so choosing a morganite stone in gentle pink was an easy choice.

Any words of advice for people pondering between traditional and personal engagement ring styles?

Many people are afraid of color because they think they will grow bored of it, but I think if you really have loved a certain color years and years you won’t start to hate it all of a sudden.

I would say be brave and pick something that is you instead of making a compromise out of fear. It’s also good to remember that you can change the stone in the future if you want.

By choosing something else than clear diamond as your centre stone you can get a statement ring with a smaller budget.

“I would say be brave and pick something that is you instead of making a compromise out of fear.”

Engagement Rings With Colored Stones

What do you think it is that makes colored stones so special?

I love colors! In colored stones there’s lots of details – every colored stone has their own personality so to speak. The colors have that magical deep shine in them and choosing a colored stone you can make your ring or other jewels really look like you.

Is a blush engagement ring just a passing trend? What kind of future do you see with colored engagement rings?

Engagement rings with colored stones are a rising trend. 10 years ago when I worked at jewelry store practically nobody wanted to see colored engagement rings. Nowadays people are more informed and I believe the colored stones are seen even more in the future.

Are clear diamonds better suited for wear and tear or is it just another urban legend?

It’s true that colored stones are not quite as hard as clear diamonds, but it’s good to keep in mind that neither diamonds are indestructible or for forever. Any stone will lose some of it’s shine over time when the surface gets scratched. With colored stones this can happen bit earlier, so at some point if the future you might want to replace the stone. It all depends how well you take care of your ring.

How do you keep your ring in the best shape as long a you can then?

The best way to keep any ring in good shape is to clean it up regularly either at home by soaking it in water with a bit of hand dish soap or taking it to a gold smith. Even if you clean your ring at home it’s good for it to get cleaned professionally from time to time. You should avoid any strenuous activity with rings: sports, gardening, baking, showers, sauna – metals and stones don’t like extreme temperatures, mechanical strain or foreign substances. That’s why you shouldn’t apply creams, hairspray or perfume while wearing jewelry. For your own safety you should never keep jewels on in bed as they can get stuck, hinder blood flow or strangle you.

Good rule of thumb is that the jewels are always last on and first off.

Buying An Engagement Ring

Sustainability is a big thing and most of us really want to make our lives more sustainable and eco friendly. Do you have any tips on how to make sustainable choices with jewels?

The first step would be buying your ring locally or from domestically from a gold smith. They can use recycled gold for instance (100% jewelry gold in Finland is recycled) whether it’s from your old jewels or from other sources. Gold smiths really use every single scrap of material so there’s practically no left overs. By choosing a ring made and designed for you you will more likely get a quality piece that can be repaired in the future or taken apart and recycled totally if it’s made of precious metal. You are also more likely to get information about the originals of stones although it’s nowadays tricky to really get 100% verification even with diamonds. You can also offer old rings and jewels to me used to craft the new piece of jewelry.

Are there differences in engagement rings bought from chain stores and a gold smith?

There are differences yes – particularly if you pick a cheap ring that’s coming somewhere far away. Different countries have different standards about workmanship and materials. In worst case the metals used in bulk production can flare up allergies, poor quality in settings cause you to loose stones that you need to get replaced which can cost lots of money. If at some point you want to redesign the ring it might not be possible. When you work personally with a gold smith you can always ask about material quality and get a ring that’s best suited for your lifestyle. The quality rings with quality workmanship can always be repaired and refashioned or recycled.

What in your mind makes a beautiful piece of wedding jewellery that will be passed forward maybe to next generations?

I think what really makes an heirloom piece is not that much the monetary value but the sentimental value. The ring or necklace can cost anything from 300 to 30 000 and it doesn’t make that much difference in this case. Wearing the jewels, taking care of them and wanting to keep them for the future generations is what makes an heirloom piece.

Thank you Laura for a wonderful chat and giving so many good advice and information! If you fell in love with a blush engagement ring ‘Pretty in Pink’, please take a moment and give your vote for it. The competition closes at last day of October a.k.a at Halloween eve 2019!

What To Wear Under White Clothes – Including The Wedding Dress

What To Wear Under White Clothes – Including The Wedding Dress

Best choice is to wear nude lingerie under white clothes, as they blend in with your skin. White is a wonderful color whether you wear it everyday or at a special occasion like a wedding. In this blog post we go over the best type of underwear to use underneath white clothes including wedding dresses. Here is my 5 best tips when choosing what to wear under white clothes or a wedding gown.

Plan your whole wedding outfit with this beautiful easy to use planner!

Underwear And White Clothes

White clothes are one of my favorites, hands down. There’s something dramatic and airy in the all white ensemble and when it comes to wedding dresses white is the most popular choice.

What I don’t enjoy when it comes to white clothes is how see through they often are. White is a tricky color in fabrics as the same fabric type can be super see through in white and there might be absolutely no problem in other colors. I have worked with many white dresses and I still get surprised about how many layers are needed to make a dress that covers everything underneath.

Here I wanted to share my top 5 tips for what to wear under white clothes and especially wedding dresses. Some of the tips are tailored also for light and airy fabrics or specific dress types like open back – but read through the blogpost and get the information. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them in the comments. I’m glad to answer them!

Here is my 5 tips for what to wear under white clothes!

1. Nude Or Blush Colored Underwear

First instinct is to wear white underneath white, but that’s actually no-no. That’s because if there’s even an ounce of sheerness in the uppermost fabric the white undies will show really clearly as it makes that part of the body more white than the others.

That’s why you should aim to your natural flesh tones when picking your underwear for underneath white clothes. For light skinned even blush and pink works better than bright white or you can try champagne and gold colored also. For darker skin tones along with champagne and gold you can try red ones, wine red, deep violet or even pure black if there’s no good nude colors available.

If your dress has several layers and it’s absolutely no see through even in bright daylight, you can basically pick any color you love. Why not even pick blue ones as your ‘something blue’.

2. Light Shapewear

My to go phrase for my customers when it comes to clothing is “a dress is not a shapewear”.

What I mean is, that there’s proper shapewear which are designed to slim down your curves and they work thousand times better and make anything on top of them look awesome.

Flesh colored shapewear makes sure there’s no seams or unneeded stress on the uppermost clothes. Most of the shapewear nowadays is surprisingly comfortable and made from soft and smooth materials.

If you want to have some serious shaping go for metal boned corset, corselette or waist trainer. The wedding dress or other gown isn’t made for reshaping you and most of the bones in them are meant to keep the dress itself in it’s shape, not to reshape you.

If you want only slight smoothing, even high waisted panties or tights can do the trick. Again, pick flesh toned ones.

3. Microfibres

These lovely, smooth, stretchy silk like microfibre fabrics are often made from polyamide or polyester. They are widely used in underwears for their softness and possibility to knit them into seamless panties and bras.

Underwear made from microfibres are usually very unnoticeable and they don’t tend to catch with other clothes because of their smoothness and slippery surface. That’s why they are perfect to use underneath light and sheer fabrics.

So when picking your knickers and bras go with those smooth microfibre fabrics instead of lacy confections.

4. Silicone Bra In Flesh Color

Trendy open backs and deep necklines are beautiful looking, but they certainly are tricky when it comes to holding your boobs in place. One of the best options is to use a backless silicone bra that sticks into your skin. Many of them come in flesh colors so they are great option if you have sheer panels or light white fabric.

There’s several different types and models, but I would advice to get one which is as wide as possible to give you the best support. The older types tended to slip off when you got sweaty, but there’s interesting newer ones that actually stick even tighter when skin gets damp.

So make some detective work to find the best one for you and make sure your skin is clean by wiping it with hand sanitizer before wearing them.  The bra in the picture is by Coconut Grove.

5. White Or Nude Slip

Slip is really unused piece of clothing in modern days in my mind. It adds one light weight and smooth layer and you can use it with any dress or skirt you need. Many white clothes need three-four layers to be really not-see-through and in cases where there isn’t enough layers the slip acts like one.

Slip works best with clothes that are made off sheer fabrics, slightly loose and not boned – like summer dresses, bias cut clothes and dresses without lining. Ideally you wear a slip with bra and panties. Sometimes you can get just underskirt instead of whole slip.

Nude colored slips are again the most handy type, but you can also go for white one if you are not bothered by the possibility of seeing the figure of the slip. With very sheer fabrics not seeing the layer underneath might be impossible. In that case the nude colored slip might look like you really don’t have anything underneath. Picking a white slip is a good way to avoid that and look more modest. Go what you feel is best for you.

Underwear is the most important part of any outfit!

The importance of good underwear is not understood as well as I would like to. The better you want to look the more crucial good underwear is. That’s why you should always use time and money for it. Even expensive and stylish clothes look bad with ill fitting underwear or wrong kind of undies.

Thinking about your underwear is important especially with a wedding dress. It’s good to think about your figure and the support or slimming it might need when choosing your wedding dress and figuring out what kind of underwear you need.

Other Things To Consider With Underwear:

Can you go without bras? Nipple covers are handy when there’s only modesty to think about.

Frills are lovely, but maybe save the lace to the wedding night. This way you can freshen up a bit after a long day.

Does your dress need a petticoat? Make sure you get the right shaped one to support the figure of your dress.

If you are worried of chafing thighs wear a pantyhose, long legged panties or use plenty of talc powder.

If you’re busty and need plenty of support, get a good body or corset. You can even find ones that work with open back or strapless dresses. Not both at the same time though most likely.

Royal Wedding Inspiration – 6 Trends To Steal From Royal Weddings

Royal wedding inspiration is ageless and elegant – perfect for brides searching for classy wedding ideas. Royal weddings are huge trendsetters in every decade. Scale and formality is something that sets them apart from other weddings but even if you’re not having a 600+ guest royal event you can pick the best and most beautiful aspects of royals weddings to use in your own.

Royal Wedding Inspiration

I love royal weddings! The biggest ones are broadcast all over the world and the smaller ones covered in local magazines and web pages. No matter the scale they are always beautiful, magical events with stylish details and classic beauty.

In this blogpost I go over six different trends from european royal weddings that can be easily recreated in your wedding. Many of these tips have something to do with wedding dress and bride’s outfit that I talk in more detail, but I have listed even more ideas in the end of this blogpost.

These trends, ideas and inspiration are perfect if you want to have traditionally beautiful, classy and elegant and bit old fashioned romantic wedding. So keep reading and have a fabulous time planning your own wedding. Don’t forget to download our FREE wedding theme planner to help you up.

Here is my 6 royal wedding trends for you to use!

1. Small Wedding Bouquets

I don’t know if small bouquets are something royal brides choose for practicality, but I certainly love the tiny bouquets. This trend has certainly been growing in 2010’s after big bouquets of 90′ and 00’s.

Whether you check Kate’s or Meghan’s bouquet or Princess Alina of Romania, you see each of those is a smallish arrangement. Even Pippa Middleton sported a beautiful small bouquet a’la royal style.

More and more brides opt for locally grown flowers which is great! If royal brides carry flowers like sweet williams, forget-me-knots and garden roses it’s all the more reason for us as well give up blooms flown in from elsewhere of the world.

2. Traditional Flower Girls and Page Boys

Flower girls and page boys with their white dresses and breeches are something that screams a society wedding for me. Having small children walk before the wedding couple is a symbol of growing up, fertility and losing of youthful innocence and stepping into the world of adults.

Nowadays the symbolism is not that meaningful perhaps, as many couples are closer their 30’s. Still the traditional look of white taffeta dresses, white stockings, peter pan or sailor collars and wide sashes is still very ageless and sweet. Totally one of my favorite royal wedding inspiration element to use.

3. Bateau Necklines

The most famous of them right now is probably Meghan Markle’s wedding gowns. But bateau necklines has been seen in royal weddings before Meghan. For example Princess Victoria of Sweden wore a bateau neckline as well as her sister Princess Madeleine. It was also seen on Mary Donaldson when she married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.

I believe the biggest draw to the bateau neckline is how it leaves the decoltée open and shows a bit of skin in a tasteful way even with long sleeved styles that are often seen in royal weddings.

4. Tiaras

This is very obvious royal wedding inspiration, because what is more royal than tiaras? Tiaras are making a true comeback along with veils to the wedding fashion after being ‘out’ for many years. In recent years tiaras have been often seen worn quite far back from the forehead so the tiara is more in an upwards position.

The hairdo accompanying it is often a low bun, although Kate wore her hair open back in 2011. The bun can be messy, sleek, oversize… Plenty of variations from a very simple, yet elegant style! The best thing is, that you don’t have to pick a huge tiara for yourself as many tiaras can be quite low.

5. White Bridesmaid Dresses

All white bridal party is often something that common brides shy away from. White bridesmaid dresses, flower girls and page boys has been quite a typical view at royal weddings in the recent years and before. In all white they make a sweet entourage for the princess bride of the day.

The dress style for bridesmaids and the maid of honor is typically sleeker and more minimalistic. One of the big trend setter for modern all white bridesmaid style was definitely Pippa Middleton at her sister’s wedding 2011. That was some serious royal wedding inspiration!

6. Long Veil And Train

Princess Eugenie’s lack of veil was noted as a nod to her work to spread information about scoliosis. Otherwise most royal brides have been wearing a veil and their dresses often have a train. Long veils and trains have typically been seen as a part of royal wedding dress code and they work well in big, formal chapels the royal weddings typically take place.

Statement veils have been listed as one of 2019 wedding trends and I’m super happy to seen them in fashion again! Veils are something you will wear only at your wedding, so take that chance. A good rule of thumb when deciding your train and veil lenght is that the larger and more formal the ceremony site, the longer the train and veil.

If you’re worried about how to move in a dress with a train, talk with your seamstress about bustling the train up or making a detachable train. You can see one in the down left on Princess Victoria’s wedding gown.

And There’s Plenty of More Royal Wedding Inspiration!

High society weddings are often beautiful mix of traditional and new wedding elements. Typically they are big and formal events but even if you’re having a small, intimate wedding there’s plenty of things you can pick from royal weddings.

I listed some other wonderful elements for you to use at your own wedding. Mix and match things you love and don’t hesitate to use them at your ceremony or reception. Here is some more royal wedding inspiration!

Other Elements To Use From Royal Weddings:

Flower arches at church door

White letterpress stationary

Monogram

Speeches

Blusher veil

Long sleeved wedding dress

Horse-drawn carriage

Vintage car

Dress code: hats

Multi layer wedding cake with white frosting

5 Garden Wedding Tips For Brides

Garden weddings are super trendy! Flowers, trees, fresh air and warm atmosphere are a perfect setting for a romantic occasion. Still, there are some things you should remember when choosing your wedding dress – happily we are sharing them right here, keep reading!

#1 Bugs love tulle

I kid you not! When there’s a big, soft tulle hem there most likely will be all kinds of flying and crawling friends in between the layers too. Sirpa from Piirto Photography shared a memory of one bride who got actual ants climbing up her skirt. Yaiks! So think twice about the tulle froufrou – maybe choose something with less layers or keep it short. Here is some inspiration:

#2 Slims heels get stuck in the grass

Soft lawn and sky high stilettos are not the most graceful combination. The sharp heels will sink into the grass like hot knife into butter and you’ll be stumbling down. Pick shoes with sturdier heels or even opt in fot beautiful flats. If you’re determined to wear slim heels, get a pair of clear plastic stoppers like those from Solemates or Gogoheel that effectively keep you from sinking. I can vouch for them, I used a pair at my own wedding.

#3 Wind can be a nuisance

This is particularly true if your wedding happens close to a shore of any kind. It’s always windy by the water. If you’re wearing a veil, it can get tricky very fast when the wind is blowing. Get yourself some magnetic veil weights that keep the veil from flying everywhere. Or skip the long veil and choose something smaller like the bandeau style birdcage veil below here.

#4 Long trains will get dirty

We can always hope for good weather, but the truth is that occasional rains happen. Soggy ground will get muddy underneath the guests feet very quickly and that doesn’t do good for your white hems. Long trains will get dusty and dirty even without rain – gravel and grass are enough. So think over whether you should pick a dress without a train or consult your seamstress on how to bustle the train up for the reception. We also love Trainloop to neatly bustle up the train.

Swarowski Pearl Trainloop from Trainloop.com

 #5 It can get HOT

When midsummer sun is baking down on your marquee and lawn you might question your decision to skip the air conditioned ballroom. A wedding dress with plenty of layers acts like a down jacket by trapping air inside and insulating you from that blessed gasp of cooler wind. In other words – you’ll sweat like a sinner in church if you’re wearing a wedding dress with a big hem. You can fight the sweats by dusting yourself with baby powder before getting dressed, and staying in shade. Or you can pick something slim and super comfortable. I can recommend an infinity dress which works beautifully as a bridal look especially when combined with statement accessories or a lace hem.

Here you go! With these tips in mind you’ll avoid many unhappy surprises at your garden wedding. Don’t forget to go and see my Instagram and Pinterest – we share plenty of wedding inspiration in both channels. Happy planning!

How to get a beautiful budget wedding dress – 10 tips to look expensive and classy

A beautiful budget wedding dress – magic words that most of the brides want to hear. Here is our 10 tips to make your basic wedding dress look like straight out of the catwalk or red carpet a.k.a classy and expensive. Great mix of diy and no sew tips and seamstress alterations all aimed to make you look like million bucks at your wedding day. These wedding dress alterations are also perfect if you’re thinking of restyling an old retro dress. Let’s start!

1.Go all in with accessories!

Statement accessories are an amazing way to add wow factor to a simple dress. Get a dreamy wedding veil or hair ornament that’s out of this world. The bigger the better!

The combination of a sleek dress and statement accessories are a big trend right now so there is a lot to choose from. You can see some examples and inspiration from our accessory collections

In the blogpost 4 Wedding Dress Tips we talk also about accessories and their importance, go and read it!

2.Get rid of the extra layers underneath and go for a minimalist look

Streamline and lighten the dress by cutting off any extra layers you can underneath. This works best with the dresses where the uppermost layer is soft.

Many expensive dresses are surpricingly light and having a more minimalist approach will make you look classy and stylish. Think about Meghan Markle’s dress which we admit wasn’t light, but still very minimalistic.

From the Wedding Dress Book, you’ll learn how to get a beautiful, well fitting wedding dress that you feel comfortable in, with the budget you have. Also you’ll learn how to avoid dress disasters and what it takes to polish the wedding day look into perfection!

3.Give the dress extra layers to make a real impact

Add volume to your dress by giving it extra tulle or chiffon for example. You can also invest in a great crinoline or petticoat to give your dress a better silhouette.

Many budget savvy dresses lack proper layers when it comes to making the hem poof. It’s quite easy to add extra layers and the impact is instant.

Good guideline we swear by: always go big or sleek, never settle in between. This way your beautiful budget wedding dress will look straight out of the catwalk.

4.Add a wrap, cape, sleeves or bolero to a strapless dress

See through layers upon neck and shoulders are very much in in the wedding fashion. This is great way to give wow factor and elegance to your basic strapless sweetheart neckline.

Especially capes are super chic right now! They can be short one or long and trailing that basically replace classic veils. Search for ready made capes or wraps or get a seamstress to make you one.

5.Cover the decoltée, open up the back

Open back is the thing in wedding fashion right now. To balance this out raise the neckline higher on the front side. This is easiest to do in lacy dresses or by adding some extra details to the front.

We’re currently working on a dress pretty similar to one in the picture, were we have opened up the lace back. It looks gorgeous! Originally the back was lifted very high up, but now it’s open to the mid back.

Can’t share the photo yet because we certainly won’t risk any of the wedding guests seeing the style before the actual day. *wink wink*

6.Add 3D details

3D flowers, bows and other details are oh so stylish and give an air of high fashion even to the simplest of dresses. From bigger silky blooms attached to one spot to little clusters around the dress, this is the sure fire way to upgrade your wedding dress from a ‘good’ to ‘fashion statement’.

Embroidery and 3D flowers are typically seen in haute couture fashion on catwalks or on expensive lace fabrics, but they are surprisingly easy to attach on a ready made dress with few stitches.

They don’t have to be very frail or small either. Try out something made of bit sturdier fabrics or get ready made big fabric roses and try them on. You could be positive surprised how they will look.

7.Add lace

With lace you can change the look of your dress so much! This is one of my favorite ways to make a basic wedding dress into a totally new gown. The lace can be added to bodice or hem of the dress but it can also be made into a new neckline or sleeves for example.

In Heili Bridal we have specialised in working with lace fabrics so I can tell you, that with lace a good seamstress will be a great ally. It can take more work to attach or rework lace, but often the end result will be stunning!

Plan your whole wedding outfit with this beautiful easy to use planner!

8.Add buttons with the zipper back

If you have a plain zipper back adding a long row of buttons is a great way to give the dress extra elegance. Make sure you get enough buttons and don’t be afraid to take them all the way to the hem if you want to give the dress even more flair.

There’s several different buttons from basic white satin ones to pearl buttons and sparkling swarovskis to choose from. I think satin ones are always elegant and classic choice and they go with most styles.

If you’re handy with needle and thread adding buttons can be nice DIY project to give your dress a makeover.

9.Add a train

Long train is something gives the royal look instantly. To most dresses you can add a detachable train you can loose when it’s time to party.

Ask your seamstress about train designs that would fit your gown and how much of fabric it would take. If you’re curious about trains I recommend checking out our ebook The Wedding Dress Guide.

In the book I speak more about train lengths and wedding dress designs in the book amongst tons of other important things. It’s 77 pages of jam-packed with wedding dress info! Go and read more about in here

10.Make sure the dress fits absolutely perfect!

This is super important because even the most expensive dress looks bad if the fit isn’t right. Well fitting dress is also comfortable and you don’t have to worry about it dragging down, bunching up or giving any nip slips etc.

Take your dress to a seamstress who has worked with gown and dresses before to see what needs to be done. I know that some brides worry over ‘ruining the dress’ by having a seamstress alterate it, but a good professional gives the dress back to you in better shape than they received it.

To get more information about most typical wedding dress alterations, read our blog post of 10 Most Common Wedding Dress Alterations You Should Know About

Right underwear is also important to a perfect fit. I talk more about them in the Wedding Dress Guide and also in my blogpost 4 Wedding Dress Tips.

Growing Your Own Wedding

Flowers

Growing your own wedding flowers is great way to save money in a wedding budget. If you have a sunny spot on your yard or on your parents’ yard and you have twenty minutes or so to use every week for watering and fertilizing growing your own wedding flowers is very much possible.

You’ll have best results if your wedding is in the end of July, in August or even in September as most annual flowers need some time to grow their flowers. I have picked my ten favorite easy to grow vintage wedding flowers for you and some picture examples how they can be used in wedding decorating. In the end I’ll give some pointers how to upgrade DIY wedding flowers to look like luxury flower arrangements.

Here is my top 10 easy to grow vintage wedding flowers!

Marigolds

First of our vintage wedding flowers are marigolds. These ones are perfect to grow in pots if you don’t have yard space. Marigolds have been suffering unlovable reputation, but now they are back and one of the hot trends in flower world. They are really hardy flowers when it comes to sunshine and hot weather.

Marigolds stand drought and once they start blooming they continue until late autumn. Choose between big or small ruffled flowers or smaller, more simple varieties. Plant these into outside once the weather get summery warm as they are very tender to frost.

P.S Most people think marigolds as deep, flaming orange blooms, but there are also vanilla white varieties which have wonderful big and showy flowers! In the picture down right you can see French Vanilla Hybrid which has big warm white flowers.

Other white varieties are ‘Snowball’, ‘Snowman’, ‘Kilimanjaro’, ‘Eskimo’ and ‘Snowdrift’. Most of the modern hybrids are odorless, so you don’t have to worry about smelly flowers.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers come with plenty of different varieties including pale butter yellows, reds, oranges and the classic bright yellow. You can also pick whether you want simple ones or ruffled blooms like ‘Teddy’ variety.

For weddings I would choose dwarf types that make several smaller flowers on one flower stalk. Maybe grow few big ones to add some interest or to use as thriller pieces in your bouquets.

Sunflowers do best when planted into garden, but you can also grow them in big pots. Just give them water and remember to fertilize so they have energy to make those gorgeous flowers. Add support stakes for big ones if you have strong winds or open yard.

P.S For vibrant combination use blue sweet peas or cornflowers together with yellow sunflowers. To have more monochromatic and understated version, combine sunflowers with creamy whites and pale yellows.

Calendulas

Calendulas are flower churning plant, which just don’t stop once they start. All the different varieties have warm undertone but vary in shape, size and colors. Strong and vibrant oranges mellow into citrusy yellows and different mixes. The flowers are edible and can be used to decorate food.

I would use these flowers as beautiful fillers in bouquets and table decorations. Calendulas are very easy to grow in my experience, so don’t hesitate to get some seeds and start. Plant them in a sunny, warm spot with fertile soil or large container with fresh potting soil.

P.S If you’re not fan of orange or yellow, check out the salmon colored ones like ‘Pink Surprise’ in the picture down right or ‘Sunshine Blush’. There is also one called ‘Snow Princess’ which has pale yellow or creamy white flowers.

Sweet peas

These flowers are the queens of vintage wedding flowers! With sweet peas you’ll be absolutely spoiled with colors and varieties. Whites, pinks, blues, cold reds and purples are all available for you in mixed or solid colors.

Sweet peas need fertile soil and water, but once they start to bloom you can just pick and pick. The more you pick, more flowers you’ll get, which makes them cutting garden workhorses.

Speaking of horses… Add horse manure or compost to the soil or grow them in big pots with stakes, teepees or other support they can use for climbing. You need to help them a bit by tying them to the support.

P.S Sweet peas get their name from their quite strong, sweet scent. They act great as their own or as bouquet fillers. Along with gentle pastels. sweet peas have also deep colors including dark blue!

Nasturtiums

These are vine like flowers, which can be mostly left on their own once they are planted into ground. The most typical types are yellow and oranges, but there’s several different color varieties from salmon and purple toned ones to buttery yellows and creamy whites, even dark reds which look almost black.

Nasturtiums also have interesting looking leaves so don’t hesitate to use them as greenery in your wedding flower arrangements. Look for white striped or spotted leaves to add interest. They can stand drought and bloom best in slightly bare, not too fertilized soil. You can grow them also in pots.

P.S In the down right you can see one of the creamy white nasturtium varieties ‘Moonlight’. Other similar pale colored ones are ‘Milkmaid’, ‘Yeti’ and ‘Ice Age’. Nasturtiums are not your most typical vintage wedding flowers, but as they are so easy to grow I wanted to give them a place in the spotlight.

Zinnias

These are one of my favorite easy to grow vintage wedding flowers as they are very similar to dahlias and carnations in their shape and are easy to grow on your backyard in a sunny and warm spot.

Zinnias come in staggering amount of sizes from little buttons to size of a small fist. Trendy colors that are very fit to weddings are white, salmon tones, raspberry, lime and different pinks and fuchsias. I have been drooling over zinnias from Floret flower farm because they have stunning colors!

P.S Grow several different sizes in same colors in your cutting garden for interesting results. Use flowers in different stages from fully opened to flower buds. The bigger varieties work wonderfully well as thrillers in your flower arrangement while smaller ones act as fillers.

Snapdragons

These flowers have height and are great for creating levels for wedding bouquets or decoration. Tall flower stalks are ultimate cottage garden style vintage wedding flowers. Snapdragons have plenty of delicate pastel tones, but also deep velvety reds. Grow tall varieties fit for cut flowers for your wedding decorating.

These flowers need fertile soil, sun and some water for you to get plenty of blooms. You can start the seeds in little pots one to two months before you can plant them outside after the last frost. Even though they love sun snapdragons do not stand sweltering heat, so try to find them a place in your cutting garden that is not baked in the sun.

P.S Snapdragons work beautifully on their own in a wedding bouquet! Get big bunch of them and spread them open in a roundish shape and tie it all together with silk ribbon for a show stopping bouquet.

Cosmos

With their silky petals and different pinks and whites, cosmos flowers are the ballerinas of this flower list. They remind me of frail daisies and have beautiful dill type greenery that works well as filler in your DIY wedding flower arrangements.

Cosmos flowers can be grown in ground or in pots and they actually prefer soil that is not too rich or heavily fertilized. These flowers can stand drought and heat, even a sun baked spot.

I tried to grow cosmos flowers one year next to my pumpkin patch. They grew huge green foliage, but not flowers. Later I realized that where the pumpkins need lots of fertilization, these beauties bloom better in poorer soil. The calendulas on the other hand were blooming like crazy in the very same veggie patch. I learned a lot that summer!

P.S In the first picture down below you can see cosmos paired with delightful small sunflowers ‘Vanilla Ice’, which have buttery yellow, almost warm white color.

Cornflowers

These flowers have rustic and vintage feel in them and come primary in blue. They are also available in violets, pinks and whites and mixed tones, so you’ll surely find your favorite. Blue ones are one of the most iconic vintage wedding flowers because they used to be plentiful in countryside in earlier decades.

They used to grow as weeds in the sides of roads and corn fields, which tells all about the conditions they like. Cornflowers do well in soil that is not too rich and they need of sun to produce flowers. In that sense they have similar needs as cosmos flowers.

Once they start to bloom you should pick flowers as the more you cut the more bushier they will become and more flowers you will get. Choose taller varieties to grow as cut flowers.

P.S For a monochromatic blue bouquet pair cornflowers with blue sweet peas. You can upgrade the look by buying from one to three big blue hydrangea blooms from any florist shop.

Gypsophila a.k.a Baby’s Breath

If I had to pick just one sort to grow for wedding decoration, I would pick Baby’s breath because it comes in white, pink or red. Gypsophila is either annual or perennial and it loves full sun.

Baby’s breath is one of the trickier ones to grow but that is mainly because for weddings they are picked just when they start to bloom. This is what West Coast Seeds say about growing it for weddings:

To grow for summer weddings, direct sow large amounts at regular three week intervals starting in early spring when there is still a risk of frost. Keep plants relatively crowded. This is the only way to ensure that at least some of your Baby’s Breath will be at its peak for your special event.

P.S Many bouquets in the pictures here have been built with baby’s breath and blooms from one other flower.

Tips For Growing Your Own Wedding Flowers

These easy to grow vintage wedding flowers are annuals, which means you grow them for a summer and they die back once winter comes. Almost all annual cutting garden flowers love full sun, need fertilization and some water to keep happy and produce big and plentiful blooms.

Water the plants daily or every few days when they are just sown or small seedlings. The ground shouldn’t be soggy or muddy, but feel cool to your hand or fingers when you dig them down inch or two and leave your hand with soil stains once you draw it back. For most flowers mentioned here the soil drying out a bit from time to time is good and they can stand bit of drought. If you plant in pots you need to water them all summer. You can stop watering flowers which are planter into ground altogether once they start to look matured and strong if you don’t have hugely hot summer.

Fertilize your cutting flower garden by adding some rotten manure, compost or commercial slow releasing fertilization into the ground before planting. It’s good to add some kind of liquid fertilizer while you water your flowers once a week or so. Ask about good fertilizers and how to use them for annual flowers from your local plant nursery.

Tips for growing your own vintage wedding flowers:

  • Check the info from seed packets or search internet
  • Ask help from your local nursery about sowing dates etc.
  • You can get free seeds from your local gardening groups
  • Pick only few different flowers but plant plenty of them
  • Figure out the colors you want before buying seeds
  • If you use seed mixes, keep in mind that they often have more bright colors in them than whites

Why Did I Choose These Flowers

All the plants I mentioned here are annual flowers you can sow from seeds for your cutting garden. They enjoy pretty much similar sunny spot and can be grown next to each other.

I have grown most of these in my own garden in Finland in Finnish zone 3, where our last average frost date is during the second week of May, although we may have occasional dips into zero at nights well into June.

Sow plenty of each kind you want as you need big armfuls of blooming flowers for your wedding day. This way you’ll have enough open or almost open blooms for this one occasion.

Remember to pick them often as soon as they start to bloom so the plant will start to produce more flowers. This doesn’t apply to sunflowers, but most of the others are cut-and-come-again type of cutting garden plants.

Upgrade your self grown wedding flowers with:

Roses

Peonies

Dahlias

Eucalyptus

Lemon leafs

Philodendron

Ribbons

Now it’s time to start planning and buying seeds to sow, so you will have armfuls of beautiful vintage wedding flowers come late summer. If you’re interested about DIY weddings, go and check out Heili Bridal’s Hygge Wedding blog post and post about planning and designing your wedding theme
