Underwear And White Clothes

White clothes are one of my favorites, hands down. There’s something dramatic and airy in the all white ensemble and when it comes to wedding dresses white is the most popular choice.

What I don’t enjoy when it comes to white clothes is how see through they often are. White is a tricky color in fabrics as the same fabric type can be super see through in white and there might be absolutely no problem in other colors. I have worked with many white dresses and I still get surprised about how many layers are needed to make a dress that covers everything underneath.

Here I wanted to share my top 5 tips for what to wear under white clothes and especially wedding dresses. Some of the tips are tailored also for light and airy fabrics or specific dress types like open back – but read through the blogpost and get the information. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them in the comments. I’m glad to answer them!

Here is my 5 tips for what to wear under white clothes!

1. Nude Or Blush Colored Underwear

First instinct is to wear white underneath white, but that’s actually no-no. That’s because if there’s even an ounce of sheerness in the uppermost fabric the white undies will show really clearly as it makes that part of the body more white than the others.

That’s why you should aim to your natural flesh tones when picking your underwear for underneath white clothes. For light skinned even blush and pink works better than bright white or you can try champagne and gold colored also. For darker skin tones along with champagne and gold you can try red ones, wine red, deep violet or even pure black if there’s no good nude colors available.

If your dress has several layers and it’s absolutely no see through even in bright daylight, you can basically pick any color you love. Why not even pick blue ones as your ‘something blue’.

2. Light Shapewear

My to go phrase for my customers when it comes to clothing is “a dress is not a shapewear”.

What I mean is, that there’s proper shapewear which are designed to slim down your curves and they work thousand times better and make anything on top of them look awesome.

Flesh colored shapewear makes sure there’s no seams or unneeded stress on the uppermost clothes. Most of the shapewear nowadays is surprisingly comfortable and made from soft and smooth materials.

If you want to have some serious shaping go for metal boned corset, corselette or waist trainer. The wedding dress or other gown isn’t made for reshaping you and most of the bones in them are meant to keep the dress itself in it’s shape, not to reshape you.

If you want only slight smoothing, even high waisted panties or tights can do the trick. Again, pick flesh toned ones.

3. Microfibres

These lovely, smooth, stretchy silk like microfibre fabrics are often made from polyamide or polyester. They are widely used in underwears for their softness and possibility to knit them into seamless panties and bras.

Underwear made from microfibres are usually very unnoticeable and they don’t tend to catch with other clothes because of their smoothness and slippery surface. That’s why they are perfect to use underneath light and sheer fabrics.

So when picking your knickers and bras go with those smooth microfibre fabrics instead of lacy confections.

4. Silicone Bra In Flesh Color

Trendy open backs and deep necklines are beautiful looking, but they certainly are tricky when it comes to holding your boobs in place. One of the best options is to use a backless silicone bra that sticks into your skin. Many of them come in flesh colors so they are great option if you have sheer panels or light white fabric.

There’s several different types and models, but I would advice to get one which is as wide as possible to give you the best support. The older types tended to slip off when you got sweaty, but there’s interesting newer ones that actually stick even tighter when skin gets damp.

So make some detective work to find the best one for you and make sure your skin is clean by wiping it with hand sanitizer before wearing them.  The bra in the picture is by Coconut Grove.

5. White Or Nude Slip

Slip is really unused piece of clothing in modern days in my mind. It adds one light weight and smooth layer and you can use it with any dress or skirt you need. Many white clothes need three-four layers to be really not-see-through and in cases where there isn’t enough layers the slip acts like one.

Slip works best with clothes that are made off sheer fabrics, slightly loose and not boned – like summer dresses, bias cut clothes and dresses without lining. Ideally you wear a slip with bra and panties. Sometimes you can get just underskirt instead of whole slip.

Nude colored slips are again the most handy type, but you can also go for white one if you are not bothered by the possibility of seeing the figure of the slip. With very sheer fabrics not seeing the layer underneath might be impossible. In that case the nude colored slip might look like you really don’t have anything underneath. Picking a white slip is a good way to avoid that and look more modest. Go what you feel is best for you.

Underwear is the most important part of any outfit!

The importance of good underwear is not understood as well as I would like to. The better you want to look the more crucial good underwear is. That’s why you should always use time and money for it. Even expensive and stylish clothes look bad with ill fitting underwear or wrong kind of undies.

Thinking about your underwear is important especially with a wedding dress. It’s good to think about your figure and the support or slimming it might need when choosing your wedding dress and figuring out what kind of underwear you need.

Other Things To Consider With Underwear:

Can you go without bras? Nipple covers are handy when there’s only modesty to think about.

Frills are lovely, but maybe save the lace to the wedding night. This way you can freshen up a bit after a long day.

Does your dress need a petticoat? Make sure you get the right shaped one to support the figure of your dress.

If you are worried of chafing thighs wear a pantyhose, long legged panties or use plenty of talc powder.

If you’re busty and need plenty of support, get a good body or corset. You can even find ones that work with open back or strapless dresses. Not both at the same time though most likely.
