Behind the scenes Heili Bridal photoshoot at Hotelli Punkaharju

The first big photoshoot for Heili Bridal during the spring 2019 was held at the Hotel Punkaharju, a blush colored boutique hotel run by a Finnish top model Saimi Hoyer. In this blog post we’ll take a peek at our shooting day with Piirto Photography and show you how does it look when we do a fashion shoot at a location.

Hotelli Punkaharju – out of a dream

If you have seen the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson, Hotelli Punkaharju might intrigue you. The blush colored romantic building on top of a steep hill which is part of bigger ridge is like a movie location. The hotel is located at Punkaharju in Eastern Finland which is well known for it’s breathtaking scenery and clear lakes. The hotel is full of exciting nooks and it even has its own tower.

The place itself is the oldest still working lodging place in Finland. It has continuously offered accommodations since mid 19th century for people coming to admire the beautiful nature of the area. In 2016 one of the Finland’s best know fashion models Saimi Hoyer bought the hotel and since then the place has reborn as one of the most interesting design hotels in Finland.

Fashion Shoot at a Historical Location

For us Hotel Punkaharju has been a bucket list shooting location since we started our business because of it’s beautiful interior and romantic feel. We were beyond thrilled when we got a chance to have our wedding fashion shoot there this spring! The best thing of all is, that the hotel is just 30 minutes drive from where we currently live. We got to use the hotel in Monday when it’s normally closed. It was surreal to spend a day at otherwise silent hotel – only Saimi popping in from time to time to call out something encouraging. There was lot of laughter during the day.

Green and White Flowers

The theme colors for Hotel Punkaharju shoot were white and green according the rooms we used at the hotel. We used for example ranunculus, roses, sweet williams and baby’s breath, all in white of course. The exciting addition to flowers and greenery was common reed. Instead of using imported or cultivated pampas grass we opted for this local wild reed with fluffy plumes which is common lakeside plant here. As usual we did all the flowers by ourselves, this time aiming for natural and airy looks.

Piirto Photography

We have been unbelievably lucky when it comes to finding partners and friends in business. Sirpa from Piirto Photography is one of those moments of luck. After moving Heili Bridal’s work studio to Kerimäki late in the year 2018 it felt like a blink of an eye before Sirpa contacted us. She runs her own photography studio at Kerimäki and does primary wedding and family photography. The photoshoot at Hotelli Punkaharju was our first project together and we’re beyond thrilled to see the finished pictures!

The White Porch

The white porch must be one of my very favorite spots at Hotelli Punkaharju. It’s a space surrounded by windows on two sides and a sweetest little library nook on one side. Normally this airy and white room is filled with rocking chairs and woolen quilts for hotel guests to enjoy at sunny mornings or rainy afternoons, but we emptied the space and embraced the cool nordic light that filled it. Can you resist that gorgeous white floor? It even creaks in certain corners like a real old wooden floor should.

Green Lounge

The green lounge was something that we absolutely wanted to use! It’s actually quite dark space with dark forest green paneled walls and tons of plush chairs and sofas. The deep green looked dreamy when combined with white wedding dresses. The lounge is fitted with lovely light fixtures made of colored glass which hang low above the sofa tables made of different woods. One of us had to hold them up and away at all times during the shooting because otherwise we would have had a lamp right in the front of the model’s head in every picture. That was one though job!

Thank you for our lovely models Linda and Inka who spend the Monday with us. You looked absolutely beautiful and shining! Now we wait for the photographs and start planning the next shoot. Paris Fashion Week 2018 – Behind The Scenes With Heili Bridal

Heili Bridal got a wonderful chance to participate to Paris Fashion Week together with evening gown brand Riikka Couture and jewellery brand By Laura Darth. Our trip to Paris in the autumn 2018 was epic and full of photoshoots and as a cherry on top a big fashion show. Scroll down to see behind the scenes pictures from our beautiful trip to the fashion capital of the world. Photography by Petra Tiihonen from Alias Studiot.

Heili Bridal fashion shoots in paris

Fashion shoots in Paris are a classic! We spent the first two days shooting in different locations in Paris together with Laura from By Laura Darth. Our models Joanne, Emilia and Katariina were the best! The days began at the hotel room were the models were prepared and day’s outfits decided.

The metro of Paris became very familiar to us. The locations were everything between small parks and streets of Paris to the best known landmarks and tourist spots like Louvre and Eiffel Tower. The first day of shooting was very warm and summery and we actually got a light tan!

One of the photoshoots stretched late into the evening and tested the stamina of the whole group. Wind helped to create wonderful pictures but felt freezing when it blew through the clothes. I think everybody was equally happy when they got food and warm bed to sleep in after that day.

Heili Bridal – Preparing for fashion show

Fitting day for the fashion show with Oxford Fashion Studio was busy and hectic. Everything was late as is typical for things with this many models and designers. Fittings had to be done in 30 minutes which is very short time when you have six dresses, six sets of jewels, six pieces of headwear and models we had seen only in pictures the day before. We only needed to change one model in the end and ended up adding another Finn to our group, Riina Seise, who arrived straight from the airport to the fitting. It was a really nice surprise!

Tourists in Paris

For one day we had a chance to play tourists and walk around the city centre enjoying the views. The best things in Paris were the pretty buildings and good weather. The light had ethereal quality that you can’t really find in North.

Heili Bridal- The Fashion Show

The actual show night was fabulous! The buzzling beehive of the backstage was very homey, our theatre experience really paid off then and nerves were soothed. Things went well and what would it be if there weren’t few small mishaps. It’s all part of the live event!

We at Heili Bridal would like to thank everybody who participated to this adventure with us: Petra, Emilia, Laura and Riikka especially. One big thank you goes to Mika and Olga who gave help when it was needed and for that we’re eternally grateful. Big thank you for everybody in Oxford Fashion Studio, you were all very welcoming and helpful, it was pleasure to work with you!

What is behind the name ‘Heili Bridal’?

What is behind the name ‘Heili Bridal’?

Three months ago we were scrolling internet for every single blog post about naming your business (Melyssa Griffin has some killer ideas!). At the same time we had piles of our favourite books nearby for some instant reference. Making bridal accessories has been our long living dream and to make it into reality we had to name it.

Giving a name brings responsibility

By naming something you give it power, it becomes more real and you start taking care of it. That is also what happens with business. It’s not just ideas anymore but a real thing, you put it in books and out there for people to find. With the name you introduce your business. That makes name giving a big and sometimes even difficult moment. You have to think what resonates with yourself with out turning your audience away. A name can make or break you but hey, you can live with an okay name.

When naming Heili Bridal we wanted to keep our Finnish dialect with us as we love it’s old poetic rhythm. We draw our collection inspirations from the nordic nature so it is natural for us show our heritage. We’re also incredibly proud how Tolkien’s formal elvish language Quenya has been based on Finnish. We searched high and low for word that sounds as beautiful as something from the Undying lands.

HEILI, BELOVED ONE OR DARLING

Heili comes from old spoken Finnish meaning date, valentine, darling or a person you go out with. The verb ’heilastella’ means to court someone or go out with someone. The beauty of the word heili lies in how it can be anyone. You have your own special heili in your life and probably you’re somebody’s heili, somebody’s darling. Heili isn’t tied to gender as Finnish is genderless language, it can be used by and referred to anyone.

Just like our business name, Heili Bridal is open to all genders, all darlings and loved ones and we hope to reach you from all over the world.

Love,

      Iida
