Simple Valentine’s Day Ideas

Simple Valentine’s Day Ideas

Simple Valentine’s day ideas don’t have to be red roses, heart shaped balloons and chocolate wrapped in pink foil. Valentines day can be bit tacky and even stressful time as it is so relationship oriented. But if you’re dating, engaged or already married it’s a nice opportunity to remind yourselves why being in love is special.

Often the simplest things are the most meaningful. We have put together a list of great and tested ideas for Valentines Day. What’s even better? We give you a list of what you need to make this ideas work. Most of the things listed are really low cost stuff so you don’t have to worry about your bank account. Put the love first!

1. Movie night

Have an utterly relaxing movie night together. If you like watching things together, pick something that’s favorite of yours and get cozy on the couch or bed. Your spouse might be really exited to skip the night out and take things easy with you.

You need:

  • Something delicious to eat. Cook together or pick up take-a-way. Or buy something ready made from store and spruce it up with spices, sauces, extra butter or fresh salad. Or get silly and buy are hear shaped chocolate box. Everything goes as long as it’s tasty and there’s plenty to eat without having to get up.
  • Your favorite movie or tv show, no matter how childish or not Oscar-worthy it might be. Point is it’s something you both enjoy. Even better if you make your own commentary through the movie/tv show.
  • Blanket or something warm to wear.

2. Time for two

If you’re planning to woo your beau, you could start the night before. Give them longer good morning kiss, send them a snap of your lingerie of the day. Get yourself into the mood early on and tease them a bit. Be a bit silly and laugh together about your cliché seducing moves if you feel like it. Most likely, they’ll work anyways. 😉

You need:

  • Your favorite underwear. Or hit the store to get a new set.
  • Sexy mindset
  • Stock up the lubrication and condoms if you need them.
  • Get a clean, soft towel somewhere near the bed to take care of any sticky stuff

3. Bath time

Taking a bath, sauna or shower together is a great way to reconnect. Being physically naked often lowers the mental walls too. Skin on skin releases oxytocin (The happiness hormone!) even without sexy times. Wash each other’s hair or scrub in between the toes. Drink hot chocolate or wine and enjoy the warmth and closeness together.

You need:

  • Bathtub or shower or sauna
  • Soap with lovely scent or is otherwise a bit extra compared to what you normally use. It doesn’t have to be expensive.
  • Clean towels! There is nothing better than a fresh towel.
  • Something to drink before, during or after. If you take a long warm bath you need to hydrate afterwards with water or juice.
  • Soft music adds a nice touch. Maybe candles or tea lights too if you feel like it.

4. Gym date

Going outside or exercising together can be the perfect way to shake things up bit at the Valentines Day. If you both are into moving, skip the separate gym hours and go running together or get sweaty at gym while spotting for each other. Your spouse might give you plenty of extra motivation and praise and you should really do it for them too. Those endorphins will carry you the rest of the evening!

You need:

  • Your exercise clothes
  • Shower stuff
  • Water bottle for keeping yourself hydrated
  • Small snack for both of you is a nice surprise after exercising.

5. Dinner date at home

Do you like cooking and baking? Spending an evening in the kitchen just by the two of you or even preparing a full dinner for your spouse would be a great way to celebrate Valentines. The food doesn’t have to be expensive of difficult to make. Our favorite menu is home made lasagne with big salad on the side, iced water and something baked as a dessert with coffee or tea. If you want to be extra fancy get appetizers before the main course.  Crostini or a small cheese spread will do the thing. Having a sit down dinner with a candle and music can be a really special experience.

You need:

  • Fresh groceries according to what you are planning to make. Pick a recipe you have used before.
  • Drinks. Wine is nice but fresh water with some lemon can be equally tasty
  • Candle on the table to set the mood
  • Music on the background
  • Dessert, home made is always extra special and tasty

3 Secrets You Must Know Before You Go Wedding Dress Shopping (other than the budget)

3 Secrets You Must Know Before You Go Wedding Dress Shopping (other than the budget)

Congratulations! You’re getting married and you’ll need to wear something for the big day. Wedding dress shopping is something you most likely spend time and money.  You want to do it right and say yes to the dress that’s perfect fit for you. The dresses are lovely and shopping is nice, but it can also be bit intimidating. There are plenty of things you have to think about: the silhouette, fabric and fit. For a common shopper there are often surprises ahead.

In this post we go through the three points you need to know before booking your wedding dress appointment.

  • Where you can shop the dress
  • How your dress is made and what is the cost of it
  • What is the style you want and how to figure it out.

But before we dig deeper I want to tell you something.

We have released an ebook where we will cover everything you need to know about wedding dresses. I know that it is quite much to promise but I can guarantee that after reading our book you do your wedding dress shopping with peace of mind.

You will have much better idea of what kind of dress you want and what practical things you need to cover to have that magical experience of appearing in front of your guests and spouse in your dream dress. The blog post is a sneak peek about the book and if you find it helpful you’ll love the book!

The only wedding dress guide you need is here.

Where to shop a wedding dress from?

The best place depends where you live and how much your dress budget is, but most people have several great options. I think these are the most common ones:

  • Designer boutique
  • Bridal boutique carrying several different designers
  • Mall or big bridal store
  • Sample sales
  • Internet: BHLDN is reputable, Etsy has also big selection (we have a shop there too) and don’t forget online second hand sellers
  • Second hand shops or fairs
  • Seamstress or a designer to make your dress from scratch

How is your wedding dress made?

You need to also know if you want a ready to wear gown, is your wedding dress made to measure or are you planning to go to bespoke. We’re fashion professionals and even for us all those terms can be bit much.

Here’s the easy guide to tell you what is what and how much do they cost. This part is good to figure out when you’re planning your dress budget.

Ready to wear €

The dress you can buy just as you see it in the shop. Many designers carry ready to wear collections which are designed to suit the bigger audience. Ready to wear is also cost effective.

Off the rack €

Same as  ready to wear. Both are the quickest options and often cheapest. Is it easy to shop for clothes when it comes to size? If so then there is a good possibility that you’re going to find a well fitting wedding dress off the rack and you can take it home right away. Off the rack dresses can usually be altered in terms of waist size and hem length but you can’t really alter the overall design. As off the rack and made to measure dresses are designed to fit the taste of most people the designs are often trendy, safe or traditional.

Made to measure €€

You pick something from a catalogue or try on different samples that you choose a dress from. Then you order it and get a dress that is made to fit your measurements. Sometimes you can customize the gown somehow: change the color or fabric, or add some details or leave those out. Most of the new dresses are bought like this and the budget can be anything from hundreds to several thousands. If you like to watch wedding themed tv-series you’ve most likely seen some form of made to measure dress shopping. There’s often more variations available to choose from than off the rack.

Bespoke Wedding Dress €€€

Bespoke is something that’s designed and made just for you from the start to finish. This is closest the Fairy Godmother’s magic dress you can get. Bespoke includes designing, pattern making, fitting and finishing. It fits you like a glove. You can ad your own creative touch or give designer free hands to visualize a wedding dress in your style. You’ll be the only one in the world wearing it and nobody will get exactly the same dress as you do.

The budget for bespoke can vary with fabrics and the amount of details. Often they’re more expensive than the cheapest made to measures. You can always negotiate with your designer or seamstress and try to find a good middle ground. It’s good to remember that with made to measure dresses there’s no costs of alterations which can easily add even third to the prize of an off the rack wedding dresses. The design and quality depend of the maker so you should pick a one you trust and who has good reputation. The whole process takes several months but the earlier you order the more time the designer has to find the perfect fabrics and fix the last details.

The dress styles

This is of course the big decision and something most people think long and hard. It’s easy to get lost in the millions of pictures and styles. It’s very important to know what you’re looking for before standing in the shop.

Even if you love shopping or trying on clothes, you don’t want to stand hours and hours before mirror in one sitting trying on every dress under the sun. You will get tired and cranky and your wedding dress shopping won’t give you the smile you deserve.

Imagine your dream dress

First thing to do is to think what your dream wedding dress might look like. Reach into your childhood and remember what was your childhood dream and what things played big part in your wedding dreams. It might give you some glues or offer a chance for reflection about your taste now.

You might want to take few days or weeks to go through magazines or Pinterest and see what kind of dresses make you stop. Make sure that you are really looking at the dress, not the models’ hair or face or what kind of light is used in the photo. You can try to cover the heads of the models to make sure or find several similar kind of dresses in different photographs and compare them.

“I don’t know what looks good on me!”

If you’re totally clueless what you like and want, make a trip to the nearest shopping mall and try on some different prom dresses or evening gowns to see what they look like on you. Don’t think too much of the color but keep your eyes open for shape of the dresses. This way you don’t feel so stressed in your dress appointment and have better understanding of what you want and what silhouettes look good on you.

Take notes

To figure out what kind of dress makes your heart jump you need to take notes about the details. What material are used and what is the shape or silhouette that you are drawn to. Try to picture the overall feeling of the dresses. Are the dresses structured and formal, or soft and flowing? Perhaps they remind you of a certain era or are decorated in some special way. You can write your thoughts on paper or print out your favorites dresses. Try to figure out why you like the things you do and what they make you feel.

It’s equally important to think

what you don’t want and why

Pick even some photos of the dresses you’d never want to wear and write down what is wrong with them. This way you will have pretty good guidelines prepared for your shopping experience. Sometimes the ’yuck’ things can surprise you.

“Underwear is the most important part of your wedding day attire.”

It’s important to figure out how open or revealing you want the dress to be: sleeves or no sleeves, do you love see-through material on the back or do you want a backless dress? Or do you fancy long or short hem? You need this info so you can get your lingerie.  You know how good bra can reshape you completely. This is very important when the wedding dress is fitted for your personal measurements. That’s why you should have a good bra or a corset on while shopping for your dress.

Plan where you shop.

What is the style you want? Take notes.

Do you want ready made or a dress made for you?
