Nerdy Mint and pink diy wedding

Lotta and Tuomo are your definition of a DIY couple. They live in a lovely old church that they have been renovating for their home for about a year now. The couple is very budget savvy and crafty and that shows in their DIY wedding with plenty of homemade food and decorations.

The old church home with it’s high ceiling and tall windows was like made for the wedding occasion. Couple’s personal style showed very well during the wedding: clean and minimalistic Scandi style combined with soft pastel tones and do-it-yourself details created the wedding atmosphere.

Custom made wedding dress

Lotta contacted us at Heili Bridal in the winter before her wedding asking for a custom made wedding dress. She wanted a wedding gown that would flatter her curves, would be comfortable to dance and eat with and look relaxed yet romantic.

We worked with her through spring and summer. Our first time meeting was in February when we had tea and chatted with the bride and her mom about the look Lotta had been thinking about and presented some ideas of our own. We created about dozen different designs from which Lotta decided the look she liked best. After small changes to the design and finding the fabrics we started the dress.

The custom made wedding dress had a long sleeved lace bodice with satin skirt with tulle and lace overlay. We used three different kind of lace for the dress: two to build the bodice and add details to it and one wide lace trim on the hem. The dress itself was soft and light with only light boning and cups to ensure it kept its shape on the body.

P.s The relaxed tone can be seen also on the grooms attire. Sneakers keep the outfit trendy and easy going and we absolutely love the patterned dress shirt.

Handmade decorations

In the spirit of DIY wedding the crafty couple made many of the decorations by themselves. The bride crafted thousand origami cranes to be used with the painted tree branch as a reception centrepiece. Budget savvy couple also used Ikea in their decorations (Knoppa sheets anyone?). Lotta let us into the secret that the last decorations to go up were the beautiful fairy lights in the reception room after midnight the night before wedding. It’s lucky they had the party at their home so the bed was close!

Mint To be

The theme color for their wedding was mint which has been favorite color of Lotta for years. It’s also very prominent color in their home decoration which of course helped to tie the wedding to the reception at home.

Mint could be found for example in bride’s shoes, grooms bow tie and suspenders and serviettes. Sweetest little detail was the couple’s dog Rudolf’s matching mint colored bow tie.

Geeky and romantic details

Wonderful little details were the lego couple cake topper and a social media hashtag that nodded towards Star Wars movie series.  After church the quests blew bubbles instead of rice. The lovely Hooray! wands were ordered and they were one of the bride’s favorite details. The first dance was one the most loved Finnish vintage ballade ‘Romanssi’ which was something the bride had dreamed about since she was little.

Leaving the church with style

The wonderful baby pink car that couple used to leave the church was Nissan Figaro owned by groom’s friend. The almost toy car had had one of its front seats taken away so the bride’s dress had enough room and apparently there wasn’t too much space for the groom either but you have to love it anyway!

Congratulations once more Lotta and Tuomo! Your DIY wedding looked breathtaking and romantic. It was such a pleasure to create the dream wedding dress for your special day and can we just tell you that you guys glowed during the wedding. <3 Thank you for the chance to present your wedding here in Heili Bridal’s blog!

Natural Halloween Wedding Shoot – pumpkins and flowers

Decorations from the Nature

Number one Halloween wedding decorations from nature are of course pumpkins. In Heili Bridal’s Halloween shoot we used red Cinderella pumpkins also knows as Rouge vif d’Etampe or Red Étampes. They have beautiful rustic look and brilliant reddish orange skin.

Season’s last flowers were autumn blooming Hydrangea, Cosmos flowers, different Sunflowers and Marigolds. The long vines were from Parthenocissus creeper which also offers dark almost pearl like fruits.

Simple and Black

Black has always been the color for celebrations, even for weddings! Dark fabric has been expensive and still the crispy, unfaded deep black has an air of richness in it. Don’t be afraid of dreaming about totally black wedding look. It will be just as dramatic as all white. For more rock’n’roll add details like a leather jacket or bandana.

Playing with darkness and light

Lanterns are a great way to add something interesting into the wintertime weddings when daylight is sparse. Use them as the decoration or make them do double duty by using them first instead of bouquets and later as table decor.

Real Weddings: Colorful August Wedding in Jewel Tones

Real Weddings: Colorful August Wedding in Jewel Tones

Nordic weddings are not always minimalist and grey as Seija and Kimmo’s color filled Finnish wedding shows! Deep jewel tones and lush flower arrangements give dramatic flare to the intimate lakeside wedding set in the shadow of a medieval castle. We’re are happy to present you the first real wedding styled by Heili Bridal.

Plan your whole wedding outfit with this beautiful easy to use planner!

Artistic and colorful wedding

With the ceremony in medieval castle, the garden setting, and the overflowing blooms, the wedding  of two theatre professionals was rich and luscious with a bohemian touch at lakeside region in Finland.

The date of the wedding was set in an August and the couple asked for a color palette to compliment the late summer tones. The two main colors were coral and purple accented with other jewel tones and backed with greens from the surrounding garden and white table linens.

Big hydrangea blooms together with eco friendly locally grown flowers and plenty of colorful candles created the dramatic, yet relaxed feel to the intimate marquee reception.

This colorful wedding was stylish and filled with products reflecting the location, like flowers and delicious fish themed menu. Colorful theme could be seen even in the brides dress which was made of breathtaking orange silk.

Getting married in a castle

Olavinlinna castle is the oldest and best preserved medieval castle in the north. The couple held their ceremony in the castle’s small chapel situated in it’s biggest tower. The Olavinlinna is best know for it’s yearly Opera Festival which it hosts in every July. One of the reasons the couple chose the site for their ceremony was the fact that bride worked a decade at the Opera Festival and was really familiar with the romantic fortress.

The wedding was held in a small boutique hotel Lossiranta Lodge which is situated right across the water from Olavinlinna castle in Savonlinna, Finland. The lakeside view with castle was wonderful backdrop for a wedding and the wedding pictures. It’s located in the old town in a walking distance from the city centre.

Colorful wedding flowers

Most of the flowers were picked from a local flower field, Väinölän Luomutila which is located in Kerimäki. They produce ecologically grown flowers, herbs, garlic and plants. It’s one of our favorite local businesses to source flowers.

The flowers consisted of asters, snapdragons, calendulas, sedums, limoniums and ornamental grasses. The eco friendly flowers were complemented with flower shop blooms like roses, hydrangeas and dahlias.

Long table garlands were created into floral foam to keep them fresh in the summer heat.

Bohemian wedding table setting

The bride scouted the mismatched vintage and retro candle holders from second hand shops. We filled them with colorful candles in red, orange, coral, purple and several different blues. The white ones brought a touch of elegance into the combination. The biggest one marked the main table which seated the wedding couple and their closest relatives.

Place card holders were crafted from twigs and twine to compliment the nature theme. The twigs were cut in pairs and tied together simply with pale green twine. The name card was placed into the stand by it’s corner. The card holders would be an easy, time and budget effective DIY craft.

Fresh nordic wedding menu

The wedding menu reflected the place and time of wedding with plenty of fish dishes, seasonal vegetables and salads. Vegetarian options were beetroot falafels and creamy chanterelle sauce. The wedding cake was a naked cake decorated with heaps of seasonal berries and edible flowers.

The versatile favorite: the infinity dress

The bridesmaid and maid of honor each picked an infinity dress from Heili Bridal as their party outfits. Even with different colors and designs the look was matching and the rose boutonnieres finished the outfits. Also the hairpieces came from Heili Bridal’s made to measure collection.

We hope you got as excited as we did about these rich colours and relaxed wedding mood! Truly inspiring to see nordic a nordic wedding with this kind of boho vibe, right? Congratulations once more from all of us from Heili Bridal to the happy couple and thank you for including us to your big day.

10 most common wedding dress alterations that you should know about

10 most common wedding dress alterations that you should know about

Everyone wants a perfectly beautiful wedding dress that fits like a glove, right? There might be some unexpected steps to the dress bliss as finding the perfect wedding dress doesn’t always mean that it fits you flawlessly. In some rare occasions you can take your wedding dress from the store straight to the wedding but most brides need to have alterations done to the dress. We have listed some alterations from the most common to the not so common.

Consult a seamstress with no hesitation

Every bride and dress is unique so everyone needs different things. Usually when you shop for the dress the store assistant lets you know about the needed alterations but some things you figure out when you visit your seamstress. If you aren’t sure what to get done don’t hesitate to ask. Consultations are usually free and with a professional seamstress  you can figure out a plan together. If you know that you are going to train or lose weight for the wedding a professional seamstress can take your changing body in to account when doing the alterations.

A trained seamstress is a great help when it comes to perfecting your bridal look, but it also helps if you are well informed about your other style decisions. Taking your bridal look from good to perfect is much more than just having a perfectly fitting dress and we have gathered some tips for you to read!

We are all about healthy exercise routines and it can be a true mood booster when the ups and downs of wedding planning hit hard. But all the fitness isn’t the same and if you are shopping for a dress long before the big day it is good to keep few things in mind. Read all of our exercise tips from the blogpost!

1. Shortening the hem

It is common that the manufacturers make the wedding dress hem extra long so it will also fit the taller customers. Shortening the hem is the most common alteration and we do it to almost every customer that comes to visit us. It is hard to estimate a price for this work as it can be anything between 38-300€ depending on the layers and if there is lace that needs to be taken off before adding it back to the final hem length.

Most wedding dresses need to have the hem shortened. There are various hem lengths for different styles and this bespoke 1950’s style wedding dress is tea length as is very typical for the era.

2. Train loop and button

Train loops are those little ribbon loops attached to your dresses train that make it possible to lift the train later in the day to make moving around the reception easier (to bustle up the dress so to speak). Basically there are two types of train loops:

  1.  the long one that you hold in your hand when you dance, and
  2. the short one that buttons right under your bum.

The later has 1-3 loops and buttons to gather the train and it is more requested because it lets both of your hands be free. There’s several different style of bustles: overbustle, under- or french bustle, drawstring- or austrian bustle, waterfall bustle etc. Some store bought dresses have one or another train loop/bustle but surprisingly many gowns need these attached later.

From the Wedding Dress Book, you’ll learn how to get a beautiful, well fitting wedding dress that you feel comfortable in, with the budget you have. Also you’ll learn how to avoid dress disasters and what it takes to polish the wedding day look into perfection!

3. Taking in/out on the hips and waist

Every body is beautiful and unique so it is really hard to manufacture dresses that would fit everyone. That means it is common to take the dress in or out on the side seams. When you are shopping for a wedding dress always consult the sales assistant how much it is possible to alter the dress size. Usually it is easier to take the dress in because then you don’t have to worry if the old seam will show.

It is important to make sure that the wedding dress is well fitting on the waist, bust and hips. These are key points to achieving the perfect silhouette. If you are shopping a dress of the rack then remember to consult a sails assistant about the alteration possibilities.

4. Taking in around the chest

Many store bought dresses are quite generous when it comes to chest size. We have noticed that the shape might need some alteration so that the neckline won’t make a gutter when you look down. This alteration is a little bit trickier than the ones mentioned before but it is also very doable so don’t hesitate to ask your seamstress.

5. Shortening the straps

Many wedding gowns are made with a little bit longer straps so that they will fit a wide range of brides. This is very easy alteration and depending on the gown costs only 20-50€.

A beautiful budget wedding dress – magic words that most of the brides want to hear. Here is our 10 tips to make your basic wedding dress look like straight out of the catwalk or red carpet a.k.a classy and expensive. Great mix of diy and no sew tips and seamstress alterations all aimed to make you look like million bucks at your wedding day. Read all tips at from the blogpost!

6. Adding a waist stay

Waist stay is a ribbon or an elastic band that goes inside your dress and fits snug on your waist. We recommend adding this to your strapless gown if it doesn’t have it. It works miracles when it comes to keeping your dress on the right place as it prevents your gown from sliding down. That means no more yanking your strapless dress up. Wait stay is an easy alteration that only costs around 25€. You can read this and tons of more crucial wedding dress tips from our  wedding dress guide

There is so much you can do to a wedding dress. It is possible to transform the back completely: opening it up or adding more cover.

7. Altering the neckline

Neckline alterations are very common request and it’s easy to make a big impact. Alteration goes both ways as you can have the neckline opened or closed. Cost varies a lot depending on the style you want. It always helps if you have inspiration pictures ready when you consult a seamstress.

8. Altering the back

No matter the style of your wedding dress it is usually possible to alter the back. You may want it open when some of the material is taken away. It is also possible to build for example a lace back to a strapless gown. This is one of our favourite kind of alteration as it requires some designing eye to make a plan for the back with the bride. If you are going to request an alteration for your wedding dress’s back make sure that you have some inspiration pictures when you consult your seamstress. This is a bit more expensive alteration so be prepared to pay starting from 150€.

Altering the wedding dresses back and closure is commonly requested change to a read made dress. It has a great impact and is usually rather cost efficient.

9. Altering the closure

Does your wedding dress have a zipper but you dream about a long line of buttons? Or would you rather have a corset back? Altering the closure is surprisingly common and not even a difficult alteration. Just ask your seamstress what is possible!

10. Adding sleeves or doing other special alteration

Sometimes we just can’t find the perfect wedding dress of the rack. That is when bigger alterations come to question and it is possible to do a lot for a dress. We recommend buying a dress that is as close to your dream as possible and then consult a seamstress for bigger alteration. One of the most common big alteration is adding sleeves but you can also ask for fuller hem, added lace or a big train. You don’t have to compromise your style even if you aren’t getting a made to measure gown.

Here you can see one of the bigger wedding dress alteration we have done. The first picture is the dress we worked with (by danish brand Lilly) and the second is the altered wedding dress. We added beautiful lace to the bodice part and some extra tulle to the hem. You can read more about this wedding dress alterion from the blog post here – Wedding Dress Lace Overlay Before And After.

Getting the perfect dress

Alterations can be divided into two groups: those you absolutely need to get done and those that alter the dress to a style you like better.

Both are important because your wedding dress should be perfect for you. There is absolutely no need to settle with a dress that isn’t exactly what you want and usually after a well done alteration you get the dream dress moment again as the dress now fits you like a glove.
