What to wear when getting ready in the wedding morning

Feb 18, 2019Wedding Tips0 comments

I’m the first to admit that I didn’t think about my wedding morning outfit when I got married. I most likely just threw something clean on before tackling the last decorating and food prepping (it was DIY wedding in every sense). BUT what you wear during the wedding morning is very much practical thing to think through before hand as I have come to learn later during my career.

Wedding morning outfit – or more like half a day outfit

Depending on your wedding day timetable, you might get into your wedding dress much later during the day. Like well beyond midday. There is often plenty of action and things to do during the morning. The busiest brides might even do last ceremony site or reception site decorating, before rushing to hairdresser or to make up. You also need to eat something during the day and possibly drive and meet people so you just cannot be naked or in your underwear all morning even if you would like to.

In this blog post I give you the main points when it comes to picking the getting ready outfit and explaining why they are so important. In the end you can find a collage of clothing pieces I would most likely pick for myself in case I got another go for my wedding morning.

What should your wedding morning outfit be like?

1. Easy to put on and take off

This is number one thing in my mind, as you should get your hair and makeup done before going anywhere near the wedding dress. To keep the hairdo and eyeshadow intact, I would advise to not wear anything that needs to be taken off over the head.

Put on something that you can zip, button up or tie around your upper body to avoid messing your face or hair. This also makes it easier to layer up or down depending of the climate. For some there might be plenty of driving around to hairdresser,  hotel or the ceremony site so you might need to adjust your layer to some places.

2. Comfort comes first

Many wedding dresses are not designed comfort in mind. Wedding day is often long and wedding dresses can be sweaty, tight, unbending, heavy or even scratchy. (Bonus tip: when it comes to embroidery, avoid dresses that have beading right underneath your armpits.)

That’s why it’s so important to be as comfortable as you can and the wedding morning is a perfect time to give yourself a break and wear something soft and loose. This way you feel good and can handle the possible annoyments of the wedding dress way better rest of the day.

3. Avoid clothes that leave marks on your body – loose garments are your friends

This is a great tip especially if your wedding dress is very open. Many clothes we wear tend to leave marks after they have been on for some time. Bras are particularly bothersome in this sense. Depending on the cut of your dress and your own body, the marks can still be visible when it’s time to walk to the ceremony. If you’re getting your photographs taken before the ceremony, this is even more important.

Loose fitting clothes that have as few drawstrings, buttons or tight parts as possible are best bet for the wedding morning outfit. If you have more modest and closed wedding dress, this is not so important when it comes to visibility, but more when it comes to feeling good.

 4. Wear something that will look nice in the pictures

The last thing I want to talk about is of course how you prefer to look like in the photos of your wedding morning. For many this might be really important. Most likely there will be pictures of you getting ready so think what you want to look like in the photos.

Feeling pretty starts from the inside, so it’s great to feel pretty and comfortable in the morning before slipping into your dream dress. It makes the whole day a bit more special too. Wear something you feel nice and good and what feels like you. If you’re planning to buy something new, kill two birds with one stone and pick clothes you can pack with you to the honeymoon! It’s luxurious to build a proper bridal trousseau like that, I think. Even if the clothes itself aren’t super expensive couture pieces.

My Perfect Wedding Morning Outfit -plan

This is what I could wear in the wedding morning if I did the whole wedding thing again. (Not that I want to. I’m still stupidly in love with my spouse and wedding was tough work you know.) The pictures are examples I picked to show what kind of clothes would be really good as a getting ready outfit.

1. Basic loose tank top I can easily slip down and step of is a perfect choice for wedding morning. This top also gives just a little bit of support on boob-region so I can skip the bra altogether. The top in picture is a basic Walmart tank top.

2. Palazzo pants that are soft, loose and easy going that I could use even outside if needed. Something that would not look totally like pj’s. The white pinstriped ones are by Michael Kors.

3. Plaid shirt was the first item I picked, as I basically live in one anyway. It’s very me and easy to get on and off. I would like bit longer one so I could almost use it as a tunic if needed. This one is by Black Bison Outfitters.

6. The morning robe is a classic piece for a wedding morning. If I needed to pick just one thing to wear it would be the robe, as it’s so easy to change into and out off and most of them look beautiful! Robes also look really dreamy in pictures! This is by EzPlaza.

7. Short pyjama bottoms are super cute and go well with the robe. This pair is by Matches Fashion via Port, but sadly they are out of stock. Shorts are silk with chantilly lace and would be a nice little luxury detail that would work wonderfully well for honeymoon too.
